In December 1957, the Seattle and Highline school districts offered free tuberculosis screening tests to first-grade students, sponsored by the Anti-Tuberculosis League. Children with parental permission were given the Mantoux tuberculin test, a skin test which reveals the presence of tuberculosis bateria in the body.

In this image White Center Heights Elementary School student Carlton J. York, center, receives a tuberculin injection from Dr. Charlotte T. Peirce under the watchful eye of a curious classmate.
