The Greenwood Boys' Club was founded in the spring of 1943 to give unsupervised neighborhood teen boys a safe place to hang out. The organizers rented an old empty nightspot at 8537 Greenwood Ave. for $1 a year to start the club, which had a pool table and ping pong, and a playground at Fremont Avenue north of 85th Street on land loaned by Puget Sound Power & Light Co. The next year the organizers raised funds in a community bond campaign to pay for a new club at the playground site. In 1946, a new concrete-brick building at 8635 Fremont Ave. N. was dedicated. The club was big on sports--boxing, football, baseball, and crew at Green Lake. The club grew and began admitting girls in the mid-70s, changing its name to the Greenwood Boys & Girls Club. The club still (as of 2017) serves area boys and girls as the North Seattle Boys & Girls Club.
