Daffodil princesses at Spring Festival of Fun, Seattle, March 14, 1964
Order an ImageSeattle's "Spring Festival of Fun" was held over nine days in March 1964, from March 13th -21st. Sponsored by the Central Association of Seattle, the festival was designed to promote the advantages of the downtown area. Daily events, such as art exhibits, performances, and retail events, were held in locations from the waterfront to First Hill, and from the central shopping area to the Chinatown International District.
The theme of the festival was the daffodil, and more then a million blooms were displayed across downtown. On March 14, the Puyallup Valley Daffodil Festival princesses came to Westlake Mall to help kick off the second day of activities and to advertise their own festival. They are shown here with Puyallup Valley Daffodil Festival president Shirley Wekell, second from left, and Carol Jean Powers, left, Spring Festival of Fun Hostess. The princesses, from left, are Sandra Olson, Paula Mellinger, Linda Van Walk, Mary Schrader, Vickie Buth, Janet Wendorf, Sandra Sutherland, Mary Dee Hurd, Karen Goettling, Carol Frederick and Shari Berntsen. Wearing corsages of bright yellow daffodils, they arrived appropriately armed with matching umbrellas and raincoats against the fickle Seattle spring weather.
