On November 7, 1941, the city of Seattle began installing hotly-debated metal parking meters, hoping the move would eliminate traffic congestion and make driving safer in the city's central business district. Over 1600 meters were installed between First and Fifth Avenues, and Yesler Way and Virgina Street. Drivers were charged 5 cents an hour to park between 7:00 am and 6:00 pm, except for Sundays and holidays.
