Seattle's Globe Hotel operated from 1898 until the mid 1960s in a building originally built in 1891 as a warehouse. The building, historically called the Marshall-Walker Building, is a four story brick block located on the southeast corner of South Main Street and First Avenue South. Part of the city's historic Pioneer Square neighborhood, the building now houses office and retail space.
The building's ground level housed a saloon from 1891 to 1970, and this image shows three men behind the Globe Hotel bar who appear to be toasting the six male patrons gathered next to the bar. It is likely that one of the men behind the bar is saloon manager August Heinrich Jaeger (1862-1929), who was born in Missouri to immigrants from what is now Germany. Mr. Jaeger moved with his wife and children to Seattle about 1905; he worked at the saloon until about 1920, although the bar itself remained open during Prohibition by selling soft drinks.
