In 1916, the Skinner & Eddy Corporation opened a shipyard at the foot of Massachusetts Street on the site of the old Moran Brothers yard. Skinner & Eddy built 75 vessels during World War I, becoming Seattle's largest shipyard. The end of the war, in 1918, brought a depression in shipbuilding, and the yard was sold in 1923.

This photo of the Seattle waterfront shows the Skinner & Eddy shipyard. The coastal steamer "Orizaba" and a battleship are in port for repairs. In the distance are the Centennial Mill Company's flour mill (left) and the beginnings of Harbor Island (right). Judging by the size of the filled-in Harbor Island, the photo was probably taken between 1916 and 1918.
