Order an ImageBy 1912, developers had dredged the mouth of the Duwamish River, making an east and west channel. The fill was dumped between the channels to build Harbor Island, and industries had just begun to operate on the filled land.
This photo shows a view from West Seattle in about 1912. Most of what appears to be water in the background is actually the low-lying land of Harbor Island. Rafts of logs wait near a sawmill on the island. Spokane Street and a streetcar line cross the West Waterway of the Duwamish River in the foreground.
