Jefferson School, circa 1911
Order an ImageWest Seattle's Jefferson School opened in 1911 with four teachers, including the principal, and 160 students in five elementary grades. The building was designed by Edgar Blair based on the brick model plan of Seattle school architect James Stephen. Two wings were added to the original eight-room brick building in 1918 and 1927.
This photo, probably taken in 1911, shows the exterior of Jefferson School near the end of construction. The school's site, at 4720 42nd Avenue SW, is now in a commercial district.
