Mayor Hiram C. Gill, circa 1911
Order an ImageHiram Gill was one of Seattle's more colorful and controversial mayors. He was elected for the first time in 1910, but was recalled in a 1911 special election. This was because he didn't enforce laws against the city's widespread gampling and prostitution. Washington women had been able to vote since 1910, and their vote was particularly important in putting Gill out of office. Gill went on to be reelected in 1914 and 1916, and he enforced anti-vice laws in his later terms.
