Holy Names Academy, circa 1909
Order an ImageA group of Roman Catholic Sisters of the Holy Names arrived in Seattle from Portland in 1880. They started a convent and an academy for girls. In 1907, The Academy of the Holy Names moved to a new building on Capitol Hill. In the early years, the school taught all grades through high school and also trained teachers. By the 1960s, the school had become a high school for girls.
This photo shows Holy Names Academy in about 1909. The school building, on 21st Avenue East at East Aloha Street, is still a Capitol Hill landmark.
