Novelty flour mill, circa 1907
Order an ImageThe Novelty Mill Company opened in 1893 in West Seattle, between the ferry landing and a large grain elevator. Trains carrying grain from the wheat-growing areas in eastern Washington ran directly to the mill and the elevator from the Northern Pacific terminus in Seattle. Novelty and other Seattle mills ground the wheat into flour. The grain elevators and flour mills were part of Seattle's bid to become a major grain exporter.
This photo, taken around 1907, shows the Novelty Mill company's flour mill in West Seattle. Excellent Flour was one of the company's brands.
