Around 1912, Bellevue, Washington had around 600 inhabitants. Nine daily mail boats and a number of steamers connected Bellevue with Seattle. The area was rural, with numerous fruit orchards and dairy farms. Several hundred acres of Bellevue farmland were devoted to strawberries.
