George H. Bartell Sr., the founder of one of the longest-running family-owned drugstore chains in the United States, opened his second store here at 506 2nd Avenue. The building was soon demolished to make way for the construction of the Smith Tower at 2nd Avenue and Yesler that opened in 1914.
