Order an ImageWilson's Modern Business College opened in Seattle in 1895. It was one of several schools in the city which prepared women and men for jobs in business. Daytime and evening classes included arithmetic, geography, and spelling, as well as bookkeeping, shorthand, and commercial law.
In this photo, taken around 1910, a group of men and women sit in a shorthand or handwriting class at Wilson's Modern Business College. The school's 1902 catalog noted that being able to use shorthand would help a man advance in the business world. There was no mention of advancement for women.
