This architecturally distinctive school building was designed by James Stephen. Summit School opened with a full house of elementary and high school students in 1905, but the older classes moved the following year to their own building, known as Franklin School. As the surrounding neighborhood became more commercial, the school population declined, but Summit was used for a variety of special programs and eventually became the home of an alternative school that still carries its name. Since 1980, the building has been the home of the privately operated Northwest School.
