The Hotel Kalmar and the James Street cable car, circa 1912
Order an ImageThe Hotel Kalmar was built in 1881 and operated by the Brand family for over 70 years. They named the hotel after Mrs. Brand's hometown in Sweden. The hotel provided furnished rooms to men who came to Seattle to work. The Kalmar was located at 522 6th Avenue, at James Street. It was torn down in 1962 to make room for Interstate 5.
