Freshman crew at the University of Washington, circa 1927

Order an Image
Rowing was added to the University of Washington's sports curriculum in 1904. By the 1920s, the team had become a serious challenge to the eastern universities which had dominated the sport for decades. In this photo, the 8-man freshman crew of the Class of 1927 poses with oars near the building where the racing shells are stored. The coxswain, who calls the strokes, squats in front.
