The University Branch of the Seattle Public Library (SPL) opened in 1910 at Roosevelt Way NE and 50th Street, and was SPL's second branch library. Before the construction of the University Branch, the University District had been served by small library deposit stations as well as temporary libraries located in the University Pharmacy and the University Methodist Church. Industrialist Andrew Carnegie donated money to SPL to build the University Branch as well as two others branches. Like most of the branches, the University Branch had a children's librarian.

In this photo, a librarian at the SPL's University Branch helps a girl find something to read. Any child who could read and take care of a book was allowed to check things out from the public library.
