Seattle's brewing industry has a long history, and the name Hemrich is associated with its 19th-century roots. In 1898, Alvin Hemrich and his brother Louis incorporated Hemrich Brothers Brewing Company in Seattle. After Prohibition, Alvin resumed brewing beer under the name Hemrich Brewing Company. In 1934, Alvin sold one of his two brewing plants and his interest in the company, including the name, and started the Apex Brewing Company. Hemrich beer was in business from 1933-1940 until financial difficulties forced the company to close its doors. In 1935, the Hemrich Brewing Co. was located at 5225 East Marginal Way in the Georgetown neighborhood.
