Order an ImageHelene Madison started swimming at Green Lake at age 12. At 19, she swept the women's freestyle swimming events in the 1932 Olympics. That year, she held all 16 women's world freestyle records and 56 American records. When she returned to Seattle, the city presented her with a car, a Navy and police escort, and a huge tickertape parade.
This photo, taken in July 1929, shows swimmer Helene Madison leaving for a national-level competition in Detroit, where she won the 100-meter race. She was 16 years old and a student at Lincoln High School.
