Seattle had no junior high schools until the late 1920s. Students in the seventh and eighth grades stayed in small, neighborhood grade schools. John Marshall Intermediate School, one of the city's first two junior high schools, opened in September 1927 at East 68th Street and Ravenna Boulevard. It served the University and Green Lake areas.

This photo shows John Marshall Intermediate School in about 1928. It later became an alternative high school for Seattle Public Schools, and as of the 2010s and 2020s, an interim site for other schools whose buildings are under construction.
