Edward Eyanson organized Washington state's first woolen mill at Kirkland in 1892. George Matzen, the owner of the Seattle Skirt & Suit Manufacturing Company later bought the mill, and the business flourished supplying goods during the gold rush days of the late 1890s and early 1900s. Business boomed again during World War I, but the mill burned in 1924. After being rebuilt in the late 1920s, it burned again in the 1930s. This time it wasn't rebuilt.

This photo, taken around 1921, shows the finishing room of the woolen mill at Kirkland. Bundles of plaid cloth wait on the floor before being processed by a series of large machines. The finishing process evens up the weave, brushes the surface of the fabric, presses it and rolls it into bolts.
