Traffic tower at Fourth Avenue and Pike Street, 1925
Order an ImageBetween 1922 and 1937, the number of automobiles on Seattle's streets more than tripled. In 1925, the city had a traffic tower at the busy area where Fourth Avenue, Pike Street, and Westlake Avenue met. It would have been hard for drivers to see one another as they neared the intersection. A policeman in the tower could see the vehicles on all of the streets. This photo, taken in 1925, shows a traffic control tower at the southwest corner of Fourth Avenue and Pike Street in downtown Seattle.
