Racing shell under construction, circa 1923
Order an ImageMaster-boatbuilder George Y. Pocock made racing shells for the University of Washington's champion crews. He built them in the university's Shell House on the shore of Lake Washington. Pocock made many design innovations which made his boats much faster than those of the competition.
This photo, taken about 1923, shows one of Pocock's shells being built in the Shell House. They were sheathed in western red cedar. A completed eight-man shell was about 60 feet long, two feet wide, and weighed 270 pounds.
