Entrance to the Orpheum Theatre, circa 1920

Order an Image
The Orpheum Theatre opened in downtown Seattle in May 1911. It was the latest in a series of Seattle theaters in the nationwide Orpheum chain. During the first week of regular performances, audiences were treated to orchestral music, a man who lifted heavy objects with his teeth, a play, a ventriloquist, musical and comedy skits, songs and stories in dialect, Japanese gymnasts, and a movie--all on one program.

This photo, taken about 1920, shows the entrance and marquee of the 1911 Orpheum Theatre at Third Avenue and Madison Street in Seattle.
