Aerial view of Denny regrade area, Seattle, 1931
Order an ImageSeattle's present-day Denny Triangle neighborhood was created between 1897-1930 by removing Denny Hill in stages. The neighborhood is located in the triangle formed by Denny Way on the north, Third Avenue on the southwest, and Olive Way on the southeast.
This aerial view of the newly cleared neighborhood faces south towards downtown Seattle. It was taken after completion of the final stage of the regrading of Denny Hill, which removed the hill east of Fifth Avenue. Elliott Bay is visible at the right edge of the frame, and Mercer Island in Lake Washington is visible at the top left of the image. In the center foreground the future site of Seattle Center is visible, at this time home to the civic center complex. The complex, dedicated in 1928 at Fourth Avenue N and Mercer Street, was made up of the Civic Field and its covered bleachers, the Mercer Arts Arena (originally the Ice Arena), and the Civic Auditorium (later the Seattle Opera House, known since 2003 as Marion Oliver McCaw Hall).
