Order an ImageBeginning in 1895, students and faculty at the University of Washington could study the stars in the school's new observatory. It was the third building completed on the present campus, and was built from stone left over from Denny Hall. The telescope had been moved from the university's downtown location.
In this photo, a student looks through the telescope in the observatory. The dome of the building was mounted on ball bearings (one is in the background, to the left of the telescope). Astronomers could turn the dome to the correct viewing position by pulling on the handles hanging against the wall.
