In 1916, the Skinner & Eddy Corporation opened a shipyard at the foot of Massachusetts Street on the site of the old Moran Brothers yard. Skinner & Eddy built 75 vessels during World War I, becoming Seattle's largest shipyard. The end of the war, in 1918, brought a depression in shipbuilding, and the yard was sold in 1923. Here, a woman prepares to christen the S.S. West Eldara, which the shipyard launched in 1918 for the war.
