Order an ImageIn 1924, United States army pilots became the first to fly around the world. At that time, there were no trained ground crews to make any needed repairs, so each plane also carried a mechanic. In this photo, seven of the eight pilots and mechanics of the 1924 world air race stand by one of their four planes at Sand Point. The race officially began and ended in Seattle.
