In the 1910s, women at the University of Washington didn't play intercollegiate sports. Instead, they had class teams which competed against each other--except for one year. The 1916 yearbook reported: "Due to the illness of Miss Catherine Evans, coach of the hockey teams, the games did not come off this year. However, the teams were chosen and ready for the contest they would otherwise have played."

This photo shows the sophomore women's field hockey team taken for the 1916 yearbook. The team had one African American member.
