Order an ImageBefore regular ferry service, hundreds of small steamers competed to carry people and freight around Puget Sound. There were so many of these vessels making short runs between so many towns and islands, that they were called the Mosquito Fleet. Some people limit the term Mosquito Fleet to the many small wooden steamers on the sound, while others include larger steel-hulled vessels too.
In this 1915 photo, the steamer "Iroquois" pulls in to Colman Dock in Seattle. The "Iroquois" was one of the larger steamers and ran between Seattle and Victoria, British Columbia. Smith Tower rises in the background, to the right of the clock tower on Colman Dock.
