In 1909, prosperous Seattle proudly showed itself to the world as a place to do business. In addition to producing the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition world’s fair, city boosters published maps and other materials to promote commercial interests.
This panorama, entitled “The Heart of Greater Seattle: The Gateway to Alaska and the Orient," shows several miles of the city’s waterfront and the Cascade Range. It also features fifteen small images of Seattle scenes: (clockwise from upper left) First Avenue at Pioneer Place, the Colman Building, the Alaska Building, Seattle in 1878, the American Bank Building, the U.S. Court House and Post Office, the White Building, Westlake Boulevard (now Westlake Avenue), King Street Station, the Central Building, Third Avenue, Pike Street, the Public Library, the New Washington Hotel, and Second Avenue.
In addition to the images, information is included on miles of paved streets, miles of streetcar lines, total bank deposits, assessed valuation of property, population growth, and other matters.
