Hotel Kalmar on First Hill, Seattle, circa 1905
Order an ImageSwedish immigrants August and Anna Brand purchased this hotel on the corner of Sixth Avenue and James Street in 1903. They named it after Anna's home town in Sweden. The Kalmar served mostly working men, offering rooms by the day, week, and month. After August and Anna passed away in the early 1950s, the hotel was administered by their children, Viola and Leonard. It was demolished in 1962 to clear space for Interstate 5. In this photo, Mr. and Mrs. Brand stand on the right holding their two young children.
