In 1925, the Great Northern Railway Company began work on its new Cascade Tunnel near Stevens Pass, Washington. Workers dug from the east and the west portals of the tunnel. They also sank a vertical shaft at Mill Creek, just east of the summit, and dug their way towards the portals. Between Mill Creek and the West Portal at Scenic, crews bored and blasted a pioneer tunnel some 66 feet south of the main tunnel route. The pioneer tunnel provided a way to haul materials in and out and let the crews work on several sections of the main tunnel at the same time. A. Guthrie & Company, the general contractor for the Great Northern Railway's Cascade Tunnel, built a construction camp at Mill Creek to house the people who worked from the vertical access shaft. This photo shows the Mill Creek camp on February 22, 1927.
