Sarah (Lehrberger) Schwabacher (1847-1942) was married to Abraham Schwabacher (1838-1909), one of three brothers that were important in the economic development of the Washington Territory and later Washington State. The Schwabacher brothers owned several businesses bearing their family name, first in San Francisco, then in Walla Walla, Washington, and later in Seattle. Sarah and Abraham Schwabacher's daughter Mina Alice Schwabacher (1878-1942), married Nathan Eckstein (1873-1945), vice-president of Schwabacher and Co., and active in Jewish, civic, and cultural communities in the city. Nathan Eckstein Middle School is named in honor of his service as a member of the Seattle School Board (1913-1920).

This dinner was probably a 70th birthday celebration for Sarah Schwabacher, whose March 24 birthday is the same as the date of this event. The colorized photograph of a young woman wearing a mid-nineteenth century may be an image of a young Sarah Schwabacher. The menu is in French, with seven courses, including the "Bombe 'Madame Schwabacher'" for dessert.
