A native of Bavaria, Nathan Eckstein (1873-1945) spent 10 years in New York’s wholesale grocery business before moving to the west coast. In San Francisco in 1902 he married Mina Alice Schwabacher (1878-1942) and the couple relocated to Seattle. Nathan served as vice president and then chief executive officer of Schwabacher & Company, which grew to become one of Seattle’s largest businesses by initially selling groceries and other supplies to miners leaving for the Klondike gold rush. Nathan also served on the Seattle School Board and was active in local and state civic affairs. Mina was active in many Seattle organizations as well, including the Visiting Nurse Service and other health-related societies, the Seattle Community Fund (preceded the United Way), and the Council of Jewish Women.
