When the United States joined World War I in 1917, the University of Washington was selected as the location for a military hospital, named Base Hospital 50. The city was responsible for building and outfitting the hospital, a cost estimated at $50,000. The Seattle Girls’ War Work Association organized a huge, six-day bazaar to raise the funds. Over 12,500 volunteers solicited monetary donations and goods to sell, and they raised over $110,000 to fund the hospital and to support military dependents.
The bazaar even had its own official song, “Come Thru," which included the line “Come thru with every nickel, put it up and don’t be fickle.” The sheet music sold for fifteen cents per copy. The cover shows a line of well-dressed men reaching into their pockets for money to give to a young woman who is collecting it.
