This image looks west along Pike Street across 1st Avenue toward the Pike Place Market, with cars stopped at a traffic light while a woman crosses the street. The Public Market Center clock and sign in the center of the image has been an icon of the Market since its installation in 1937. In the late 1960s there was a debate about Pike Place Market's future - whether to demolish the Market and redevelop the land into apartments and office buildings, or to preserve and revitalize it. In 1971, the issue was settled when Seattle voters approved an initiative to create a historic district around the Market with a mandate for "preservation, restoration, and improvement" of the area.
