Seattle Tent and Awning Company was begun by S. W. Robb (1866-1929) when he arrived in Seattle in 1896; in 1919 he sold the business to Thomas H. McGroge. The company advertised as "Manufacturers and Jobbers" of silk and canvas tents and goods for mountaineers, sportsmen, and lumber camps. During WWI the plant was the largest producer of goods in the Northwest next to the shipbuilding industry, handling enormous orders for the War Department. The company operated until the 1970s, when it changed its name to Seattle Tent and Fabrics.
This image appears to show Seattle Tent & Awning Co. employees at work on a canvas tent. The location of the image is unknown, although Seattle Tent & Awning Co. locations are listed in city directories as Spring Street and Western Avenue (1908) and First Avenue and Columbia Street (1925).
