Joseph Mayer & Brothers Co. floor clock, Broadway High School, Seattle, circa 1920
Order an ImageBroadway High School opened (as Seattle High School) in 1902 on the corner of Broadway and E Pine Street. It was Seattle's first building specifically constructed as a high school. The high school Principal's office, shown here, contains a large portrait of the class of 1903, which had 103 graduates, at the time the largest graduating class in the history of Seattle. Also prominent in the image is a floor clock made by Joseph Mayer & Brothers Company, a watchmaking and wholesale jewelry business begun in Seattle in 1897. Founded by German immigrants Markus (1878-1950), Albert (1872-1929), Emil (1881-), Herman, and Joseph (1868-1937) Mayer, the company existed in various form until 1991.
Austin Seward (1885-1974) worked as a local photographer in the early 1920s for Pierson’s studio, a commercial photography firm that took pictures for Mayer Brothers.
