Washington Mutual (WaMu) was incorporated as the Washington National Building Loan and Investment Association on Sept 25, 1889. It grew to be the United States' largest savings and loan association until its collapse in 2008.

This photo shows Washington Mutual customers inside the bank's location at the Walker Building at 1101 Second Avenue. Washington Mutual Savings Bank remodeled this building for bank use and moved into it in 1921.

Caption accompanying image: Winter Day at Washington Mutual about 1923. Original photograph in bank files, probably by Asahel Curtis. Bank had not yet been extended across alley. Copy negative and prints by Dudley, Hardin and Yang.
