Washington Mutual (WaMu) was incorporated as the Washington National Building Loan and Investment Association on Sept 25, 1889. It grew to be the United States' largest savings and loan association until its collapse in 2008. This photo documents the bank's location at the Walker Building on Second Avenue.

Caption accompanying image: The Walker Building, built in 1899 was purchased by Washington Mutual in 1921 and remodeled for bank use. The bank's new office was located in the heart of the smart shopping district. Cheasty's Haberdashery 'leading men's store of the day' moved from street level to the second floor when Washington Mutual occupied the building and the exclusive Carman dress shop for ladies occupied the third floor.
