Portrait of Winona Bailey as a child, 1879
Order an ImageHelen Winona Bailey (1873-1938) was born in Maine to Charles Harris Bailey (1849-1920) and Mary H. (Wilder) Bailey (1849-1897). The family moved to Colorado about 1890, then to Seattle around 1905. She was a Latin teacher in the Everett High School from about 1906-1912, and later head of the Language Department at Queen Anne High School. Winona was an avid outdoorswoman and a member of the Mountaineers Club. In 1907 she fell 75 feet near Dodwell-Rixon Pass on a climb to Mount Olympus during a Mountaineers camping trip at the Elwha River. She received only minor injuries, and continued climbing throughout her life. She was also a world traveler, making extensive journeys in 1922 and 1929, then speaking around Seattle about her experiences in Africa.
