In the early 1880s, prospectors from the Black Diamond Coal Company, a California firm, found rich coal deposits in King County, Washington. Over the next fifty years, the mines at Black Diamond were among the county's highest producers.

This photo, taken in Black Diamond around 1920, shows the homes of the General Superintendent of Mines (l.) and the Superintendent (r.) on the south side of present-day First Avenue. These buildings were removed later when the Pacific Coast Coal Company built low-cost homes for the miners.
