The Pacific Coast Company was organized in 1897, and comprised several existing organizations, most notably the Pacific Coast Steamship Co., Pacific Coast Coal Co. and the Pacific Coast Railway. The Columbia & Puget Sound Railroad, originally the Seattle & Walla Walla, became part of the Pacific Coast Railway in 1916.
The Pacific Coast Coal Company had offices at 563 Railroad Avenue (now Alaskan Way) at the Seattle waterfront. The building housed the company's sales department as well as the dispatcher for the Columbia & Puget Sound Railroad which carried the company's coal to the docks from the mines. This photo of the building was probably taken sometime between 1910 and 1916.
