Order an ImageBy 1899, Dawson had a population of around 15,000 people. It had a city government with a volunteer fire department, and its businesses and amenities included 50 to 60 restaurants, a hospital, and four churches. There were 35,000 people in the region, primarily working in the mining industry. By this time, individual miners had been replaced by large mining companies.
