People and goods ready to start over Chilkoot Pass, circa 1898

Order an Image
The gold seekers packed their supplies from Sheep Camp to just below Chilkoot Pass. At this point, they assembled their goods, weighed them, and, if they could afford it, arranged have their supplies carried to the top of the pass by packers or tramway.

In this photo from approximately 1898, possibly taken by Eric Hegg, people wait by their supplies and sleds before starting the steep climb up Chilkoot Pass. The sleds will have to be carried over the pass too.
