In October of 1960 the whereabouts of a flamingo escaped from Woodland Park Zoo was front page news around Puget Sound. The flamingo escaped on October 12 after a flight from his open enclosure at the zoo. Acting park superintendent, Edward J. Johnson, said the flamingo was likely eating well and its dense feathers would allow it to easily survive the winter's cold.
This image of the flamingo was taken when he was spotted in the water of the Lake Washington Ship Canal, near Ballard.
