This image of machinists Frank Smith, Homer Pricket, and Axel Olson, was taken in 1944 at the Olson & Winge Marine Works yard on the Lake Washington Ship Canal. The men are posing on the deck of the schooner Columbia, formerly the King & Winge, which was built in 1914 by the King and Winge Shipbuilding Company, an important maritime concern on Puget Sound from 1899 until the late 1920s. In 1944, the Columbia came to the Olson & Winge Marine Works shipyard, where many of the same men who built it were still employed. The ship was adapted and repaired for war service for the Coast Guard as the CGR-2469.
