This image of the Hotel Leland features a Seattle Water Department official checking water meters. The Hotel Leland, located on First Avenue and Pike Street, was built in 1900 by brothers Frank (1865-1954), John, and Erwin Goodwin of the Goodwin Real Estate Company. Seven years later a wooden planked road, called Pike Place, was constructed off of Pike Street and First Avenue, allowing city councilman Thomas P. Revelle (1868-1941) to designate the boardwalk in front of the Hotel Leland as the city's much-needed first public market on August 17, 1907. Seizing opportunity for growth, Goodwin Real Estate began work on what is today the Main Arcade of the Pike Place Market, opening on November 30, 1907. Over the years the Leland Hotel became amalgamated into Pike Place Market, and still stands, recognizable by the large "Meet the Producer" sign.
